Remix Challenge: week 32

Dare I say it? Spring may have finally arrived around here … well, at least I wore flats (instead of boots) on my commute for a week straight, so that’s a start. Can we make it two weeks without a new dump of snow? Did I just jinx all of us? [Edited to add: Yes, yes, I did. Sorry, everyone!]

On to the outfits!

Monday, April 22, 2013: work

Remix challenge
Skirt, Joe Fresh (thrifted); turtleneck, Banana Republic; shoes, Style Inc.; necklace, Winners; bag, Coach (vintage)

I realized that it had been a long time since I last wore this skirt, and it felt like time to give it another spin. Red suede Mary Janes add to the slightly twee vibe, but I think it still ended up on the right side of “grown up”. I balanced things out with delicate jewelry.

Remix challenge
Swarovski rhinestone bracelet + part of my old bridal necklace (as bracelet)

Tuesday, April 23, 2013: work … never ends

Rexic challenge
Skirt, Japanese label (consignment); tank, Tristan; jacket, Diane von Furstenberg; necklace, J. Crew Factory; shoes, Prada; belt, J. Crew Factory

No “pants day” this time! I decided to keep this week a strictly skirts-and-dresses affairs. I’m still hunting for the perfect cream blouse to wear with this skirt, so in the meantime I paired it with black, again. If you’re wondering how I kept the skinny belt in place, here is my secret: safety pins doubling as handy “belt loops” (the skirt doesn’t have any). Obviously, this only works if you’re wearing a jacket or sweater to cover the incriminating evidence.

Wednesday, April 24, 2013: work … and the dentist (ehhh!)

Remix challenge
Dress, Sweet Chemise (thrifted); shoes, Modern Vintage; bag, Chanel (consignment)

I love wearing this dress; it is sooo comfortable. It’s also pretty limited, from a remixing perspective, because that neckline is hard to compete with. I did my best with accessories, but still … sometimes, originality has to give way to more practical considerations. This probably won’t be the last time you see this dress on the Remix Challenge.

Remix challenge
Necklace (Tristan) + vintage brooch

Thursday, April 25, 2013: work and work function

Remix Challenge
Skirt, BCBG; top, Jacob; belt, J. Crew Factory; jacket, Theory; shoes, Jimmy Choo (thrifted); bag, YSL (consignment)

I had to attend a work function today, so I went with a more “serious professional” look. My options in that respect are becoming increasingly limited because …

Friday, April 26, 2013: work

Remix challenge
Jeans, Motherhood; sweater, Old Navy; necklace, Banana Republic; shoes, Ferragamo; bag, Arcadia

… I have a confession: our family is about to grow, again. Yep, come September, we will be welcoming a new addition to the family and we couldn’t be more thrilled about it! In the meantime, you can expect to see a lot more muumuus on BCRL (only partially kidding, by the way) and more complaints from me about the abysmal quality of maternity clothing. Hang on – it’s going to be a bump-y ride! Sorry, I just couldn’t resist – I promise, that was my one and only bump-related pun.

Remix challenge
Someone came for a visit!

[A small request: I am hoping to keep this a Facebook-free pregnancy, and would very much appreciate your help in that regard. Please message me any time – or better yet, let’s make plans for coffee – and I will happily fill you in on all those STFU Parents-worthy updates 😉 Thanks!]

Manicure of the Week: Chanel Malice

Malice was Chanel’s sole nail polish offering for the holidays last year, and a limited edition at that. Although it’s now long sold out, you will want to check out this post – Chanel Malice is a real beauty, and at the end I have a couple of suggestions for some dupes that might fill its place if you fall for it like I did.

Chanel Malice
Chanel Malice

As the name would suggest, Chanel Malice is dark and vampy. While it’s in the same (extended) family as Rouge Noir, and Chanel’s other dark beauties, it’s actually in a class of its own. It has that rare, true, lit-from-within glow that makes it anything but a plain, old burgundy. [Of course, the weather wouldn’t cooperate the day I took these photos, so my camera’s flash will have to stand in for that all-elusive sun.]

Chanel Malice (flash)

Under direct light, you can really see its fire; but even in regular light, Malice has a depth and richness to it that is quite unparalleled. Application is a breeze, as expected. Two coats, no problem. I would add a topcoat, just for some extra glassy shine, and to extend the manicure. [I’m finding that chipping is a bigger problem with longer nails.]

If you like Malice, but missed out last Christmas, don’t worry, you’re in luck. Although not exact dupes, OPI Germanicure and OPI Every Month Is Oktoberfest are very close. Both have the same lit-from-within glow; colour-wise, Malice is a mix of the two – not as purple-leaning as EMIO, nor as brown-leaning as Germanicure. Both OPI polishes are from the Germany collection (natch), and should still be available online and in beauty supply stores.

For an “inspired” outfit, I wanted something glamorous and classic – something that an anti-heroine in a ‘40s film noir might wear. My best bet? A slinky LBD, sky-high pumps, and a piece of statement bling.

Chanel Malice
Dress, Elie Tahari; brooch, vintage; shoes, Enzo Angiolini

Speaking of bling, I love the geometric shape of this brooch – it’s perfect for dressing up the decolletage.

That said, I need to work on my “vamp” face. But, hey, lipstick is a start, right?

Remix Challenge: Week 31

Monday, April 15, 2013: work

Remix challenge
Skirt, Zara (thrifted); jacket, Joe Fresh; turtleneck, Winners; brooch, vintage; shoes, Tory Burch (consignment); bag, Chanel (consignment)

After the umpteenth weekend snow storm of the year, I was feeling rather somber come Monday. Black and blue seemed like an appropriate combination, livened up by a bit of bling. [Hint: it’s a sneak preview of what will be featured in this month’s “What I Bought” feature.]

Tuesday, April 16,2013: work

Remix challenge
Sweater, Joe Fresh; blouse, J. Crew (consignment); shoes, Enzo Angiolini (swapped); bag, Coach (vintage)

Obligatory “pants day”. This is also likely to be the day when I feel least inspired. I’ve done this blouse/sweater combo before, and I really like it, so I threw it together with my black work pants and hoped for the best. And looky here what the day brought:

They may be traditional, but there is something about roses …

Wednesday, April 17, 2013: busiest day of the year

Remix challenge
Dress, Pink Tartan (consignment); shoes, Kenneth Cole (thrifted); necklace, Tiffany; bag, Chanel (consignment)

Two big work deadlines, an educational seminar, and a doctor’s appointment meant that I barely paused for breath today. Luckily, I wore one of my wrap dresses, so at least I was comfortable doing all that running around.

Thursday, April 18, 2013: work

Remix challenge
Skirt, Valentino R.E.D. label (consignment); blouse, Talbots (consignment); cardigan, Winners; shoes, BCBG Girls; pearls, vintage (gift); earrings, vintage

You know how some days, there will be one particular item that just calls your name? Today, it was pearls. One of my close friends, who shares my current obsession with vintage costume jewelry, generously shared some of her recent estate auction swag with me; one of the pieces I ended up picking was a short string of (faux) pearls, which I couldn’t wait to pair with my rhinestone-and-pearl clip-on earrings. The rest of the outfit was just an excuse.

Pearls + florals – so pretty!

Friday, April 19, 2013: is it Saturday day?

Remix challenge
Sweater, Old Navy; necklace, J. Crew Factory; shoes, Stuart Weitzman; bag, Chanel (consignment)

Sorry about the blurry pic! Blame it on getting woken up too early by a toddler eager to start his day. I was supposed to wear this outfit a few weeks ago, and kept putting it off for various reasons. Its time finally came, and I was pretty happy with it. Nothing ground-breaking, but a decent way to end a week that start not too auspiciously. Later, I finally got a long-due haircut and the result looked like this:

Mika (at Ricci Hair) is a genius!

See you next time!
