The One Where I Buy a MaxMara Coat

Yeah … so, this happened.

I kept thinking about this coat after seeing it at Holt. The price tag was … inhibitory. (More on that in a moment.) And, then, the perfect storm came along: a super stressful week at work and home. I was overwhelmed, sleep-deprived, and coming down with the Toddler Plague. You could say that shopping under such influences is a bad idea … and I would generally agree. Except that, in this case, I ended up with this sweet coat. So, not entirely bad.

the one that didn’t get away

Yes, it was expensive. But I wasn’t completely irresponsible. I had a gift card, and a not-insubstantial coupon ($100 off for $300 spent). All told, my out-of-pocket damage was just over $250 – not bad for a $800+ coat, and not bad for a mid-weight coat (perfect for fall and spring in Edmonton) that I will hopefully wear for years.

I love the sleek, cocoon style. It a good mix of classic and modern. It easily accommodates several layers – an important consideration because I wear this coat daily on my work commute, and I hate the feeling of bunchy layers (especially blazer sleeves bunching into my armpits) – without looking bulky. I never lusted after MaxMara before (as y’all know, I’m not really a coat person), but I have to admit: they do make a nice looking coat.

Dutch Floral

I don’t know, you guys. I really don’t know how I feel about this outfit. It was pretty cool in my head, but I feel like the reality comes up short, somehow. I guess I’ll just have to keep working with the layering potential of this J. Crew cropped sweatshirt.

what do we think about the lipstick … too dark?

Story time: I knew I wanted to get my hands on this sweatshirt as soon as I saw it. That print, of course. J. Crew offered a 30% off dealio over the Thanksgiving weekend, so I had every intention of taking advantage of it. But then that turned out to be the weekend we were all down with Toddler Plague. Except my husband. Naturally, I made him go and buy it for me; naturally, he did, because he’s awesome like that. I guesstimated the size, and erred on the safe side – I told him to pick the Medium (I’m usually a Small in J. Crew tops).

Aaaand … I was way off. Way. The Medium looked oversized on me, with a weird neither-regular-nor-cropped length, and hugely bunchy sleeves. Since I paid almost-retail for it, I was definitely not happy. So, once everyone was feeling better, I dragged the family back to West Ed (my least favourite shopping experience) to see about a return. The store had exactly two sweatshirts left in stock: XXS and L. At first, I thought I was screwed … and then I tried on the XXS, just for the hell of it. And proceeded to spend about twenty minutes in the changing room, trying to overcome my disbelief that, yes, in fact, I was wearing an XXS and, no, it didn’t look absurd on me. Oh, J. Crew! Your vanity sizing is so silly.

So, there you have it: if you’re inclined to buy this sweatshirt, go down at least one size. Maybe two, depending on how cropped you want your “cropped sweatshirt” to be.

XXS, hahaha!

The Sprinkles Dress

Warning: this will be a photo-heavy post. I just love this dress so damn much. (Humour me, it’s mah birthday.)

All. The. Colours

Can we start by stating the obvious? Impulse buy. Total impulse buy. You might remember I refrained from buying a cute, yellow shirt dress from Gap last month, on account of the (admittedly problematic) shirt dress I already have in my closet. You know the one – the granny dress. Turns out, resisting one cute shirt dress is my limit. So, this one came home with me.

Yep, I’m pleased with myself

You guys know I’m addicted to colour, and this dress has colour … in spades. The tag called this a “floral print”, but to me it looks like sprinkles, especially up close. (Or maybe a colourful scaly lizard? Um, sprinkles it is.) Appropriately, I think, I wore it to my son’s 3rd birthday party.

See, sprinkles!

Like all my other technicolor dresses, this one is a cinch to accessorize. I can pretty much close my eyes, walk into my closet, pull out the first thing I grab, and bam. Outfit. Now that is my kind of dressing. (I wore it on its own for the inaugural outfit because, obviously, it needs to be seen in all its glory. Bam!)
