What I Wore: December 2016

You know what? December was a pretty decent month. The kids and I were sick through most of it, but I didn’t have much else to complain about. There were Christmas parties, and get-togethers with friends, and lots of fun family times. And wonderful, delicious food. So much food. I spent the last week of December in the stretchiest of jeans and loosest of dresses, and that’s only when I couldn’t get away with wearing my pyjamas. It was, well, blissful.

Of course, I did wear regular clothes as well, for at least 3/4 of the month.

I liked most of these outfits a lot, individually, but seeing them here makes me realize there wasn’t a ton of cohesiveness between them, once again. In some ways, it bugs me that I don’t have a more definitive style, but I’ve also come to accept that my wardrobe will never be as cohesive as some people’s. It’s impossible when you love prints as much as I do. I do have a lot of basic pieces, and those are actually surprisingly capsule-friendly, but when I put outfits together, the focus always ends up on the statement pieces that defy encapsulation, as it were.

I’m still debating whether to do a wardrobe challenge of some sort this year (just for fun!), but I’ve been preoccupied with other hobbies lately, so I haven’t had as much time to devote to this “project”. The beginning of the year is when I usually get an itch to do something new, so we shall see what happens in the next couple of months. If you have ideas for me, leave a comment!

Girls’ Night … And Day

As I mentioned last week, I had two of my dearest friends visiting from out of town recently, and our big plans revolved around a girls’ night in (with wine, Chinese food, and BBC dramas featuring hunky Brits) followed by a girls’ day out on the town. For the latter part of our adventures, I decided to wear my fave Anthro swing dress. It’s comfortable as pyjamas, forgiving as a potato sack, and infinitely cuter than both. No brainer, really. I added my trusty turtleneck underneath because the temps are still hovering around -10 Celsius, and there’s no easier way to layer up a summer dress. Luckily, our daytime adventures did not involve a lot of outdoors exercise. Surely, you are not surprised.

My friends and I hit up the antique mall, which proved to be the most “strenuous” part of our day. We followed that up with lunch at Nomiya Noodle Bar in Oliver, which was fantastic. I *had* to try one of their ramen bowls, of course, but my instant favourite was the Takoyaki (fried dough balls with octopus — they had me at “fried dough”). My friends raved over the matcha green tea creme brulee, but I decided to help myself to another order of the Takoyaki instead. No regrets. And my dress was very understanding about it all.

We finished up our day with a screening of La La Land, which is THE ABSOLUTE BEST THING EVER AND YOU MUST SEE IT IMMEDIATELY. Ahem. Sorry to shout, but it really is wonderful. I hate musicals *and* jazz, and I’m generally not a fan of romantic movies. Or Ryan Gosling. Or Emma Stone. (I know, sacrilege!) But this movie tugged at my heart like a pro; I wouldn’t consider it a romance so much as an ode to youth and the sense of seemingly infinite possibility and wonder that we feel when we are young and full of dreams. The ending of the movie is bittersweet, as all life tends to be after a certain age. It reminded me of the discussion about ghost ships which we had on the blog a few weeks ago. If any of you have seen La La Land, I would love to hear your thoughts; I know the film has been criticized for its privilege, so I am particularly interested in your perspective on that issue.

I had a lot of time to explore my weekend casual style over the holidays … too much, maybe. See, my winter casual style is not much to write home about (I much prefer dressing for summer weekends, or summer period), and I don’t particularly enjoy getting creative with those clothes, unlike my work wardrobe. It’s easy to fall into a rut, especially when it doesn’t even really feel like one; after all, weekends are usually short, and are sandwiched by days upon days of cute outfits (or so I tell myself). But a week-long (stay at home) holiday is a different matter — definitely rut territory. I’m the kind of person whose mood is very much influenced by what I wear; too many blah outfits, and I start to feel blah. Something had to be done! So I made an effort. I mean, not much of one, as this outfit attests, but enough to feel a few steps above blah.

Non-blah weekend casual, for me, is all about pairing simple pieces with a few interesting accessories; nothing too fussy. Unlike the rest of the time, I don’t wear prints — it’s all about solids, and neutrals at that. So accessories have to be interesting to stop the whole look from free-falling into the blahs. This scarf is a neutral, but has a luxe texture (even though it’s just acrylic) that works nicely off the silky blouse. My YSL satchel is, again, pretty simple but with a few interesting design details.

Last but not least: my old Tiffany “love” necklace, recently rediscovered. About a year ago, it somehow “disappeared” and I was convinced that I had lost inside my own house (possibly in a tragic vacuuming accident). I was cleaning out a drawer, and checking all the various jewelry pouches hoarded there, when I found it. I’m not sure how I managed to overlook it for an entire year — and through a half dozen searches — but I am glad to have it back. I love its simplicity, and since it was a gift from my family, it’s extra special. And you can bet that I’ll be keeping it *far* away from the vacuum.
