Boho Tweed

What I Wore: Woeful Saturday

Rachel Roy sari dress
Dress, RACHEL Rachel Roy (via consignment); sweater & blazer, J. Crew Factory; necklace, House of Harlow; boots, Tahari; bag, MbMJ

I wanted to call this “Professorial Boho” because, in my head, all professors wear tweed, all the time. It just comes with the territory, doesn’t it? (Along with elbow patches, tortoiseshell rim glasses, and black turtlenecks. It is known.) But I am willing to concede that this might not, in fact, be the case aaaaalways and rather than confuse you, I changed the title. Which is really neither here nor there. Ahem.

This was not the outfit I had in mind when I started getting dressed, but I really liked how it turned out. I’m a big fan of the cut of this J. Crew Factory blazer, which manages to fit my chest without making me look like a rectangular box. That’s nice, isn’t it? Of course, I ended up being over-dressed for the occasion (a Saturday morning outing with the family, which quickly turned into a tragi-comedy of mishaps and minor meltdowns – so, only slightly more woeful than a regular Saturday chez nous), but as I always say: when the going gets tough, the tough dress up like they have somewhere better to go.

I swear that sweater looked clean when I picked it off the closet floor, and I don’t recall doing an impromptu army crawl through a dust pit that day. Hmmm …

The Dress Thief

What I Wore: Family Gathering

BCBG faux wrap dress
Dress, BCBG (via eBay); shoes, J. Crew (via consignment); bag, Rebecca Minkoff

OK, I didn’t actually steal this dress. I just … stole the idea of this dress. From Adrien, because she has the best dresses, ever. I waited for what seemed like an eternity for this one to pop up on eBay so I could make it my own, and when it finally did, I did. And, clearly, I have no shame because I’m splashing my bad deeds all over this here blog. Awesome dress is awesome. Happy dress-thief dance.

BRAD-PITT-DORKY-DANCE

There is a lesson to be learned from this immoral anecdote, I’m sure, and it’s not that style thievery pays. (Although, listen: it totally does. In compliments and undeserved style cred. I would know.) No, I think it’s something about patience, or perhaps about being really good at eBay. Wait, maybe it’s about the importance of finding amazing style inspiration. Yes, I think that might be it. And, hey, if you’re in the market for some of that, you can always check out some of the truly stylish ladies who inspire me (linkies in my blogroll).

The Ancient Trench

What I Wore: End of April

Rebecca Minkoff MAC Cerulean
Pants, NYDJ (via consignment); top, Gap Factory; trench, Gap; shoes, Old Navy; necklace, J. Crew Factory

I need a new trench. Did I mention that before? I feel like I have complained about my trench situation a lot lately, but I’m not sure if it was to you guys, my husband, or myself. Anyway, I need a new trench. This one is 6 or 7 years old, and wasn’t phenomenal quality to begin with. I would love to have a classic Burberry trench (who wouldn’t), but that’s not in the cards for the foreseeable future, and I’m not really motivated to look for an affordable alternative. Maybe if I daydream long enough (and complain long enough), the universe will send me a Burberry trench via my local consignment store. Well, a girl can dream.

I love the “cerulean” blue of my Minkoff MAC, and I wish the leather was a little sturdier and less prone to water-damage – I’d wear the heck out of it. It’s a perfect mom-on-the-go size, and the cross-body strap is awfully handy. (Obviously, I don’t subscribe to the diaper-bag-as-handbag philosophy. I’d rather tote extra baggage than have to dig through diapers and related ephemera when I’m looking for my phone. Purely personal preference, though.) But I don’t have the time or the inclination to baby my bags right now, so this beauty will probably not get to see the light of day nearly as much as it should. Le sigh.
