Can it be called monochrome if it involves a floral print? I guess that’s a rhetorical question; Imma go ahead and file this under “purple”, which may be more generalization than truth. What’s for sure is this is another Peak Adina outfit. I like the slightly offbeat proportions, and the fact that it’s undeniably feminine without being at all girly. I note, with some concern — she says, tongue firmly in cheek — that it features pants, just like the last outfit I tagged as most representative of my current sartorial aspirations. Since my love-hate relationship with pants is well-documented on this blog, what does that mean?

Best as I can tell, it means that I’m still figuring out how to translate my new interest in unusual and/or architectural silhouettes to dresses and skirt outfits. For example, while I love sheath dresses and pencil skirts, it’s too easy to default to my old trusted outfit formulas when I wear these pieces; those resulting outfits, while certainly figure-flattering and suitable to my lifestyle, don’t excite me all that much anymore.

Here are some dress/skirt details to which I find myself drawn these days: (knife and regular) pleats, paperbag waists, tulip skirts, two-piece dresses (aka dresses that look like separates, with the top part “untucked”, but which are attached — is there a term for this style??). Some of the details can be found on pieces I already own, and I am by no means rushing out to replace everything else. It’s just taking me a while to figure out how to remix my favourite pieces in new ways that let me explore some new sartorial territory. And what could be more fun?

Another thing I want to explore these days is playing with volume and texture, rather than colour combinations and print mixes as in the past. This outfit is a good example of that, too. Who says monochrome has to be boring?

Soooo … clearly, I have not subjected this dress to the sleevectomy I previously discussed, yet. There is a stack of clothes I’ve been meaning to take to the tailor for minor alterations, this dress included, and I never seem to find time. It’s a 5 minute drive. You’d think it should be easy to manage but … nope. So bell sleeves it is, for a little while longer.

I didn’t do anything ground-breaking in putting together this outfit, which might make for a boring blog post, but makes for an easy morning routine. I kept things really simple and low key, with matching navy shoes and a navy & burgundy necklace. Burgundy is a perfect complement to both navy and blush — or the two together; actually, burgundy goes well with pretty much every colour I own. Oh, did I mention that I finally found the perfect navy pumps? Well, I did. It only took, what, 2 years? 3? They are Calvin Klein, and they’re pretty comfortable; I’d say they rank at least 3 consecutive-standing-on-my-feet-hours, which is pretty good for a 3-inch heel. There’s some gel cushioning happening there, for sure. I got my pair at Winners, because I’m wary of buying shoes online (I don’t trust sizing, even for brands I know), and I have been unable to find any decent navy shoes secondhand in all my years of looking. Based on past experience, CK shoes are really good quality-for-the-price if you can get them for $60 or less, which is what I paid for mine, and what you might pay at places like Zappos, 6pm and the like (if you’re American – sorry, Canadian peeps, but our online shoe-buying options are not as great).

What I Wore: May 2017

Summer finally arrived in Edmonton last month, always an exciting time around these northern parts. Every year, I promise myself I will savour the warm weather to the fullest, and every year life proves a great distraction. I did my best to stop and smell the (mostly metaphorical) roses on weekends, but I`m still struggling to process that it`s already June. Mid-June, no less. Although sad to see the summer disappear so quickly, I am glad to get June over with; there is a lot going on, and if I can get through it all, there will be a nice reward at the end: a long weekend getaway to Palm Springs. Oh yeah!

There were some real winners in the mix last month, including my absolute fave No. 16. I also really liked Nos. 11 and 21, and … actually a few others as well. May was a good month, sartorially speaking. There was also some wardrobe curating going on, with a few pieces leaving my closet and a few more coming in. All of them thrifted, because you know that`s how I roll. Just wait till you see the next chapter of Tales From the Thrift. It`s gonna be epic.

Here is what I wore in May 2015 and May 2016.
