This is a very simple outfit, but I like this recently thrifted blazer a lot so I figured that it deserved a post. A short post — because, really, I don`t have much to say here — but a post nonetheless. It`s Friday; who`s reading anyway? That`s mostly a rhetorical question, although … who IS reading blogs these days? I keep seeing articles about the death of blogs, and I wonder. Some days I feel like a dinosaur, an anachronism left over from the days when people took pictures of their outfits in the mirror. I never really evolved, and it`s too late to start now. I made my peace with that a while ago, but I`m still occasionally filled with nostalgia — not necessarily for the heydays of blogging, but for some of the old skool bloggers I still miss. To add to that, as old favourites leave, no one is taking their place. My own reading list is shrinking, though not for want of trying on my part. So help me out: who are some of your favourite voices on the internet?
As for the blazer? It`s a good one. A linen blend, but not the wrinkly kind. Structured, but not constrictive. Interesting cut, yet also classic. It fits true to size, if you want to hunt it down on eBay. The good news is that Anthro brand blazers tend to have low re-sale value so you should be able to snag this one for a song.
Love your outfit!
And….I’m reading blogs,Adina! I read yours every day and enjoy every post! Perhaps I’m late to the game as I have only been a blog follower for a few years but I love reading them and yours is my fav.
Good morning,
I just wanted to tell you that I have looked forward to getting your blog posts for years. I love your style so much, and as I have similar coloring to yours, it’s hard for pasty girls to find things sometimes. So thank you!
Also you are a fantastic and brilliant writer, and you always make me smile. I know it’s a lot of work putting these posts together as often as you do, so I just wanted to thank you. And to tell you that I’m very actively listening…. all the way from Texas.
The sponsored content of blogs is really turning me off of continuing to read blogs. I’m so tired of going to a blog that I’ve read for years and all of the sudden they are trying to tell me about life insurance or how she loves this company’s frozen pizza as a healthy family dinner option (both of which actually happened within the same week). This person is a fashion/lifestyle blogger, she’s not talking about life insurance on the regular. It just seems so cheap and somehow desperate to me.
I genuinely miss fashion bloggers that would take pictures of their outfits and explain to me if the clothing ran big/small.
I hear you on the Spon Con, but it’s not even that – I just struggle to find people whose writing I enjoy and who write about things that interest me. There are tons of fashion bloggers out there, obviously. But many of them are just in a different place (style, life, age) than me and I don’t really relate. I still have my faves but I’m sad to see more and more of them leaving the scene.
I read 3 blogs daily, bluecollarredlipstick, spiritedthrifter and directrice. I enjoy them all. Three different styles.
Spirited thrifter has become very casual in the TX climate. She enjoys thrift stores like me.
Directrice is dressy business in Wash DC. She has a great eye when it comes to layering clothes. But unlike me, she spends a lot of money on her wardrobe.
I learn from each blog.
I also love reading Nicole (we were thrifting buddies back when she lived here) so I will have to check Directrice as well. Thanks for the ref!
Another vote for TheDirectrice. Bonus?she’s also a lawyer… And I also am a fan of blogs- I kinda don’t get some of the newer social media.
YOU are one of my favourite voices on the internet! I don’t often comment but read every new post, and really look forward to them.
Thank you Shannon! I really appreciate the kind words.
Hi, just wanted to second Lauren’s comment – I, too, love your writing. I’m often attracted to blogs first by the photos, but if there is no good writing to back it up, then I don’t continue reading.
Since I’m older (57) my blog list skews heavily towards over-40 and older bloggers … Midlife Chic (UK), Une Femme (US) etc. But lately I’m enjoying a couple of younger bloggers from the UK – The Anna Edit and Lily Pebbles. They both also have Youtube channels and are given lots of opportunities for travel etc. – it’s really their livelihood. I came to them via Caroline Hirons (beauty) and Ruth Crilly (A Model Recommends), also from the UK. That’s a nostalgia thing for me, since I am originally from there (I’m in Canada too). Caroline writes about beauty and Ruth is a former fashion model who is also an excellent writer. They also both have Youtube channels and I’ve learned a lot from all of them as I try to do my best to be well-groomed and presentable in my dotage!
Thank you so much for those recc’s! They sound just like the sort of thing I might like.
I’m a bad commenter, but I’m here (every day thanks to my RSS reader!)
I don’t have great recs because I mostly read other horse people blogs these days, in large part because of everything mentioned above. It’s still a community dominated by blogging like it was in 2010, 11 or so.
That’s awesome! I know it might sound silly but I really value having an online community because I don’t always have my IRL friends close by – they all live all over the place and all of us are busy. Plus, shared interests are a given with online communities like that.
I only recently started reading blogs again. When I was home with my kids it was too frustrating trying to read with them crawling all over me.
Another part that is frustrating about blogging is that it is still mostly a visual form of communication. I’d blog more if I didn’t have to splice fancy photos between sentences to get people to read my content. Your blog is a good mix between pics and content but some just blitz you with photos/ads and don’t really talk about anything. I’m more interested in reading the snark from the other “olds” trying to navigate today’s ridiculous fashion industry than the pretty edited pictures.
A lot of the young 20 somethings I work with are really into podcasts, which I find curious because they are really just talk radio. I listened to a few in the car on a recent trip and was impressed by the range of topics they cover without the need for visuals. I don’t think I could work while listening to a podcast though, that would be very distracting.
I love reading so much more than watching videos. Reading is my comfort food. Thank you for writing!!
As far as the outfit – the SHOES. The SHOES are the thing.
Hahaha – the shoes are fun 😉
I too feel there are more bloggers leaving the scene (Franish is sorely missed ). I do read savespendsplurge – a few outfits but has a fun ‘week of money’ post. That said , I have moved on to YouTube these days and follow a couple of channels . My favorites are agirlinboston – corporate executive, non-trendy blogger and Justine leconte. Not gonna lie , I love knowing how super rich women spend . I say that in a non creepy way.
Oh man, I’m really going to miss Franish!! *tear*
I never particularly comment on blogs, but I do read yours every day. I discovered you a few months ago from Save Spend Splurge.
I like personal finance blogs and don’t read other style blogs. I just love your writing and humor.
I’ve been reading Sherry for years, since the Fab Broke days. I used to love PF blogs but stopped reading when they started to feel repetitive. Save Spend Splurge is def an exception. Always fun topics and I love the Week of Money posts.
Those Week of Money posts make me late every single Thursday. Sherry has a good blend of topics but I curse her for tempting shopping at times!
I totally agree with you about many PF blogs becoming repetitive. The first list of “10 ways to [insert whatever]” is generally the kiss of death for me.
Same here, haha – I’m always a few minutes behind schedule on Thursdays, but I love them.
For what it’s worth, I’ve been reading your blog for years now, and I like your more old school take on blogging! I agree with a previous commenter that SponCon has taken a lot of the pleasure out of reading blogs…constantly being suspicious that the words I’m reading are often designed to sell me something (if not in that particular post, then “credibility-building” towards the next sponsored post) makes it hard to really feel any sense of personal connection. Another previous commenter mentioned that she loves reading Ruth Crilly, and I’ll cosign that: she’s one of the very few whose writing I genuinely look forward to reading. Other than that, I’m glad I mostly live in book blog world, where there’s much less gloss.
Maybe I have finally found my niche – old skool blogging. Kicking it like it’s 2007 all over again, hahahah!
I’m not even mad about SponCon anymore but most of it is just boring stuff. Like someone else was saying – insurance?! No thanks. My mornings deserve better 😉
I’m still reading blogs! They have almost replaced magazine reading for me. And I would rather read than watch a video – I can usually read it much faster. Your blog has a nice mix of photos and words – too many photos are annoying; I don’t need 40 photos of your outfit! I also appreciate your commentary, introspection, and analytics! It’s hard to find blogs that are relatable; I don’t need a California blogger telling me what to wear in the winter, nor are the outfits of a stay at home mom relevant to my life. I will have to check out some of these other recommendations.
Count me in as another fan of your blog & many others as well–I still enjoy reading them! As another poster mentioned, I read blogs more than magazines now. And I do not watch videos–can’t stand them–even when some of favorite bloggers make them.
I love your reading recommendations, your travel posts, and your TV talk too. One of my other favorite blogs is Wardrobe Oxygen. And, I’m also so sad that Frannish seems to going away. 😔
I totally get where Franish is coming from — she has so much going on and it’s such an exciting time in her life — but I hope she comes back to blogging regularly at some point. I miss her voice & insights into another world (medicine).
I read blogs! I came late to the game and seem to have missed the heyday, and now my reading list gets smaller and smaller as I stop reading more and more sponsored and fake blogs. I think yours is currently my favorite! Someday I hope mine will be similar, especially the recently thrifted edition.
Hang in there! I think there is definitely room for genuine, personal blogs no matter how crowded the blogosphere – I think people want to find communities online, not just glossy catalogs.
I read here everyday, or every time there is a post anyway, as you know! My Bloglovin is getting smaller and smaller but I still read blogs daily. A lot of the ones I read I’ve been reading for YEARS but they are not the glossy, sponsored-content, personality-less blogs and most are UK-based. I just like to see what normal women like me wear to work / juggle kids on the daily plus I follow a lot of OOTD types on Instagram for a bit of inspiration.
I love blogs like yours but I feel like they’re an endangered species, LOL! I like Instagram too, but I also just want to read about people’s lives a bit so I can’t give up on blogs.
Agreed, I think that’s why I quite like IG stories as well, just getting little snippets of daily life. I don’t watch them everyday as I don’t have time but the odd one here and there, it’s nice to hear people’s actual voices sometimes too!
