One of the upsides of my thrifting adventures this year is the drastic reduction in my retail shopping. I rarely visit brick and mortar stores anymore, and browse online with similar (in)frequency. I also rarely feel tempted by items — the retail price usually sees to that — but every now and then, the struggle becomes real. A perfect example was J. Crew’s Fall 2016 blazer offerings. I lusted after them back in September, when I first glimpsed them on other bloggers’ IGs, and I continue to lust after them now. Last week’s Black Friday sales made the temptation even greater; prices were still substantially higher than thrift comparables, but the lure of “40% off” should not be underestimated.

I was resolved to stay strong, however. In reality, I have more than enough blazers already … and I am bound to find more whenever I go thrifting. So instead of hitting that “add to cart” button, I hit up my closet. I love the fit of this Liz Claiborne blazer, and it has a similar vibe to the current J. Crew line-up, although it isn’t made out of wool. I paired it with a navy “column” and neutral accessories, and called it an outfit. You can never go wrong keeping things simple.

    • It is not easy! The whole Black Friday/Cyber Monday phenomenon is a well-oiled machine built to tempt us. And there are probably legitimately good deals to be had on necessary items — it’s resisting all the OTHER stuff that’s hard.

  1. Well done Adina! The struggle is real, but the resistance is TRIUMPHANT!

When I happen to find myself in a bricks & mortar clothing retailer (trailing behind 23 year old daughter, for instance!) that sticker shock is huge. Sends me right back to my thrift stores stat!

    Warmest wishes!

    • I always remind myself that treasures await at the thrift store. It helps that I don’t *need* anything. Even the things that are due for replacement are not really urgent needs, so I can wait. I just need to remember that, LOL!

  2. I need to shop my closet (more) as well. I also can’t believe how often I’ve succumbed to purchases purely enabled by IG and blogs! It would be so in my financial best interest to stop reading them. But I need my fluff fix…

    • I hear you. I also feel that way when I see other thrifters’ IGs or blogs — it makes me want to go out and see what I can find. FOMO comes in all kinds of forms 😉

  3. I did order some things during the sale weekend, but of the three packages which have arrived, I’m only keeping one thing – which never would’ve happened before, and I am strangely proud of myself? haha
Love your blazer – H&M has a similar one in a little bit of an oversized vibe right now, and I am stalking it like crazy!
