This year, February had 2 things going against it: it was frigid as hell, and it was the month before my eagerly-awaited vacation. I hated every minute of it. Nah, I’m just kidding. It wasn’t that bad. But I’m glad it’s over because (a) March feels like a month when I can reasonably allow myself to dream of spring (it’s not close but it’s closer) and (b) I’m off to Mexico! Hasta la vista, fam!

Ok, but first:

I wasn’t sure how February’s outfit lineup would turn out because most of it was improvised on the fly, but I actually really like. I feel like my wardrobe is really gelling right now, which is a big part of my satisfaction with the resulting outfits. My key accent for the month was red (different shades) and I like how that warmed up my usual neutrals.

I’ve been doing a bit of closet-editing in anticipation of my clothing swap and a secondhand sale event I’m participating in later in March. I feel like I’ve reached the point where almost all of the pieces left in my closet are an 8, 9 or 10 (out of 10). Which is great … were it not for all the cool things I keep finding at the thrift store, and can’t resist bringing home. I’m working on my thrifting FOMO, and definitely being far more selective than before. But I’ll never not get excited about experimenting with new pieces, so I think my next wardrobe management exercise will be to set aside a “core” closet (of staple pieces and statement items that I mean to keep long term) and a smaller, rotating capsule of “trendy” pieces that I can replace regularly – always thrifting and recycling, of course.

What’s new in your closet these days?

6 Comments on What I Wore: February 2019

  1. You make everything look so good. I’ve come across a few of your pieces that I don’t think I could pull off – the mustard color tie waist pants (not featured here) No bueno! I would love to come across and have a tapestry print skirt in my closet though.

    • Thanks! I have done my fair share of trial and error thanks to thrifting, which has helped me figure out what works for me and what doesn’t. Lots of things don’t, which is okay.

A tapestry print skirt sounds cool!

  2. I really love the overall effect of having a statement color for the month! My favorite here is still that first one with the leather + collar detail from your Edwardian Goth experiments.

I like the idea of setting a section of your wardrobe for rotating thrift pieces! I was thinking of doing something like that eventually (once I actually get back to thrifting with some regularity, lol) because I do love the process of experimenting with new pieces.

I recently got a few lighter colored items to introduce more color value variety in my wardrobe (and it’s probably my inner desire for brighter days coming through) – taupe boots and some blue and bronze printed floral pants.

  3. I have been doing a wardrobe remix from Business Casual to Casual. I bought some long cardigans that are awesomely like wearing a bathrobe to work, and went all out on the loafers that are everywhere. I also have a soft spot for Western gear so there was an uptick in Frye and bootcut jeans.

  4. Love your monthly roundups and yes, it’s been cool to see the cohesion. Nice job with the color theme. I love that first black outfit the best. My new find: metallic brogues from eBay. So comfortable and go with nearly everything.
