Um, yes. I am indeed wearing culottes. If you have not already turned away in horror and dismay, let’s plunge on. I did buy a pair of trousers that were described as culottes, at least by the sales associate at Club Monaco. First of all, I hate the term “culottes”; it always makes me think of the sort of underclothes that French ladies might have worn at the turn of the last century. Second, I am not entirely convinced that the term is appropriate in this case. I thought culottes were cropped much higher than the ankle. Regardless, this is definitely a “look”, and one firmly outside my comfort zone. I think (and my husband agrees) that photos don’t do it much justice; I swear it looks better in real life, although that’s cold comfort in a blog post. The reality is that, after years and years of skinny pants, it will take a while for my eyes to adjust to a new silhouette.

I ended up buying the trousers (new, on sale though not inexpensive) for a number of reasons. One, my evolving style is skewing more towards the archictectural/minimalist direction, where the cut of things is the key to staving off visual boredom and the goal is not necessarily figure flattery. It’s a strange new land for me, but I’m having fun trying to find my way. Two, the colour is one of my favourites, and a core non-neutral in my wardrobe palette. I knew it would work well with several existing pieces, which makes that whole discovering-a-new-style thing much more manageable.

So, there we are. I am wearing culottes and we are (hopefully) still friends. Happy Valentine’s Day!

This outfit is an updated take on an old favourite from a year or two ago. I love this scarf so much, and it’s the perfect accessory for a simple/plain dress and for a cold day. Which is very apropos at the moment, what with the windchill effect that Mother Nature seems to love throwing our way. This was my comfy & cozy take on Friday casual, and I have to say that I didn’t miss my jeans one bit.

As much as I love the outfit itself, we must really talk about the shoes. After over a year of patient stalking, I finally snagged the Manolo Blahnik Mary Janes of my dreams. Of course, I couldn’t wait to wear them. Luckily, they are a wonderfully versatile shade of burgundy, which means that I could add them to this (and any other) outfit with no difficulty. The eBay listing had them described as “brown”, but the pictures suggested that they were, in fact, a brown-based burgundy; that, combined with a very good price, pushed me to pull the trigger, and I am ever so happy that I did. The shoes are in fantastic condition, and if my other pairs of Manolos are anything to go by, will last a long time. They are very comfortable, save perhaps for the strap which will hopefully soften a bit with wear. Since I plan to wear them as often as I can, that shouldn’t take too long.

I feel like I need to apologize for this outfit, you guys. Not for wearing it — it’s wholly inoffensive, after all — but perhaps for putting it on the blog. It’s probably not very blog-worthy. Truth is, I loved it. I loved wearing it. I didn’t get compliments or turn any heads (and definitely didn’t set Instagram on fire), but I had a spring in my step all day nonetheless. If I was still chasing that “effortless chic” ideal, this would be my version of it.

The sweater is a recent thrift find, scored without a label. I bought it because I adore this shade of blue, and the wool blend was incredibly soft and luxurious to the touch. It’s nothing fancy, and the RN number eventually revealed it to be a Banana Republic piece. It will get a lot of wear, assuming it holds up. The pants are my absolute favourite, by T. Babaton. My current obsession is tracking down this (unknown) style so I can buy a back-up pair. I love the cropped length and the slouchy, tapered trouser cut. It feels much more elegant than the Sloans I have worn religiously the last few years. Sadly, I have not had any luck in my quest at the thrift store. I have my eye on a similar style on the Asos website, and it is taking a good amount of self-control not to pull the trigger on it. Looking back at this outfit isn’t helping either. If you guys have recommendations for a good cigarette pant-trouser hybrid unicorn, let me know!
