Something New

This was an attempt to “think outside the box” in terms of silhouette. I think I mostly pulled it off? It’s definitely a creative take on business casual; while my office is pretty chill when it comes to the dress code, I played it safe by wearing this on a Casual-Friday-adjacent Thursday. Did not get any perplexed stares, so I’m counting it as a win. The duster cardigan thing is one half of a Sarah Pacini ensemble I thrifted last year; together, the pieces have too much of a “Cathy on the moors” gothic princess vibe, so I’ve decided to separate them for now – though, someday, I definitely plan to go for the full effect. I paired it with a very basic top+trouser combo to keep things a bit more low-key. Here’s a close-up of the necklace, which is pretty neat:

Something Old

This is an “old Adina” dress, but it’s too nice to pack away. The rust coloured blazer nicely complements the grey, and picks up some of the colour on the floral print. I think this dress would be far more interesting with a different shape on the bottom – maybe a midi-length, tulip style wrap skirt. But, alas, I have no sewing abilities to speak of, and I’m also no fairy godmother, so re-designing a dress is outside my skill set.

Neither Borrowed Nor Blue

I would be a far more successful blogger if I could manage to keep the punny title train going for at least an entire post. Oh well. I like this culotte outfit a lot, so you’re seeing it in lieu of anything blue. This is my take on “mom uniform” – linen culottes subbing for jeans, but otherwise basic and comfortable. The flats are the most comfortable; they’re a new-to-me brand (Me Too) but I love their aesthetic and their practicality. I think they’ll end up being my go-to walking flats this summer, as my beloved Kelsi Dagger loafers have kicked the bucket while my back-up pair by Jones NY is not far behind. Replacement of staple items is one of the downsides of thrifting, because finding a specific item is always a crapshoot, but I got lucky in this case — though I’m still on the look-out for another pair of loafers. For now, though, I will count this as a happy ending.

Happy (belated) Canada day!

What I Read: More Random Musings

It’s Friday, so you know the drill. This week’s edition of Random Musings, in lieu of anything vaguely book-related, is inspired by the Greatest Love of 2018 (So Far): Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson.

One

There have been a lot of think pieces in a very short time about BDE – what it is, who has it, who doesn’t. I’m down with this assessment of the Four Chrises; it’s gonna take me a while to digest the longer list here. (I most definitely do NOT have BDE — according to Buzzfeed, I’m at 50%, and that might as well be zero in this context.) But I have one question: if Rihanna has the most BDE ever – by popular consensus, it seems – what about Beyonce? The Rihanna vibe is very different from the Beyonce vibe. Does Beyonce have BDE?

Two

I think the public obsession with the Grande-Davidson pairing is baffling. Am I the only person who doesn’t think that it’s a big deal or unexpected that they got engaged approximately 6 minutes after meeting? They’re young, they’re in love, they’re rich, they’re not encumbered by regular people responsibilities. Why the hell not? I remember being in the throes of infatuation in my early 20s; had I had the wherewithal to act on my whims without thought of the consequences, I might have racked up a few post-haste engagements of my own. Do I think this is likely to last, to an actual marriage or beyond? Not really, but I’m not sure that’s the point; it’s certainly not my business to rain on these lovebirds’ parade. Seriously, though: can someone explain why the internet is losing its mind over this story? Is it simply because this particular couple has been pretty open about their feelings, and people are just getting irresistibly drawn into the whirlwind of their enthusiasm? Or am I missing something about Grande and/or Davidson that explains the obsession?

Three

Not to circle back to BDE, but I found it interesting that one of the more popular sub-topics in the Grande-Davidson genre is the “leagues of hotness” discussion. Grande is, again by popular consensus, several leagues of hotness above Davidson, and this is the kind of situation that apparently never not raises the question “how?” [insert obligatory eyeroll] In my experience, for men in Davidson’s position there are only two accepted answers: (i) money, and (ii) a big d**k. If the roles were reversed, the conventional answer would be … actually, I have no idea. I don’t think there is one, unless “he’s gay and it’s all just a fauxmance” counts as one. I get why people might not immediately jump to money being a, quote-unquote, explanation* for “non-conventionally attractive woman dates hot guy” scenarios; glass ceiling and all. But why does no one go, “she’s obviously just phenomenal in bed, duh”? Why is “he obviously has no sexual interest in her whatsoever” – in other words, the exact opposite – the go-to assumption?

[* No explanation is actually needed. What people find attractive is a long and infinitely varied list. Not sure why this is still noteworthy in the year 2018.]

The Artists

Of all the things in my closet, this Sarah Pacini dress comes closest to encapsulating my Artist style avatar. It’s so good. I didn’t even know the designer until I took it home (from Value Village, y’all know how I roll), but the fabric and the details had me convinced that it was something special. It’s 100% linen, with a soft shimmer to it. The cut skims the body without being too revealing; the draping around the neckline and hem is genius. It’s going to be tricky to pair with toppers once the weather is cooler, but I am game for some experimenting and in the meantime, I am going to enjoy the heck out of wearing it on its own (and be thankful for the heatwave).

Honourable mention in this outfit goes to the bag, which was also thrifted. It’s the Marc by Marc Jacobs Ukita style in a lovely pewter metallic colour; I have been wearing it non-stop. I’ve been getting really lazy about switching bags from day to day, especially since I often end up using my backpack for lugging things to work and back; I like having a purse that’s relatively small and that goes with everything. This fits the bill, and it was a whopping $20. Team Thrift 4 lyfe.

And I almost forgot these earrings! Inexcusable!

Old Timer

This Deletta top one of the oldest items in my wardrobe, and one of the first Anthro pieces I ever thrifted. I am still very fond of it, even though the print is a little too sweet for my current aesthetic. For that reason, I paired it with trousers I would never had thought to wear 3 or 4 years ago — give the outfit a little bit of edge. These COS trousers have a strong menswear vibe (dare I say, a little grandpa-esque?) which I really dig. It’s a simple outfit, but one that doesn’t feel boring. That’s the sweet spot, as they say.

Updating A Favourite

New trousers, new outfit and another excuse to show this Marni top on the blog. The colour of the pants is not quite the same shade of red as the top, but it’s close enough. I like to wear bright colours like these on a Monday because it *feels* like I’m making an effort and being optimistic, whereas my internal morning monologue goes something like this: Noooooooooooo! (Picture me clinging to my bed like Rose clung to that raft after the Titanic went down. Ain’t no room for Monday up in here, sorry!)
