With Bell (Sleeves) On

Soooo … clearly, I have not subjected this dress to the sleevectomy I previously discussed, yet. There is a stack of clothes I’ve been meaning to take to the tailor for minor alterations, this dress included, and I never seem to find time. It’s a 5 minute drive. You’d think it should be easy to manage but … nope. So bell sleeves it is, for a little while longer.

I didn’t do anything ground-breaking in putting together this outfit, which might make for a boring blog post, but makes for an easy morning routine. I kept things really simple and low key, with matching navy shoes and a navy & burgundy necklace. Burgundy is a perfect complement to both navy and blush — or the two together; actually, burgundy goes well with pretty much every colour I own. Oh, did I mention that I finally found the perfect navy pumps? Well, I did. It only took, what, 2 years? 3? They are Calvin Klein, and they’re pretty comfortable; I’d say they rank at least 3 consecutive-standing-on-my-feet-hours, which is pretty good for a 3-inch heel. There’s some gel cushioning happening there, for sure. I got my pair at Winners, because I’m wary of buying shoes online (I don’t trust sizing, even for brands I know), and I have been unable to find any decent navy shoes secondhand in all my years of looking. Based on past experience, CK shoes are really good quality-for-the-price if you can get them for $60 or less, which is what I paid for mine, and what you might pay at places like Zappos, 6pm and the like (if you’re American – sorry, Canadian peeps, but our online shoe-buying options are not as great).

I love this outfit, although it is admittedly not the epitome of figure-flattery. More like epitome of pyjama chic. These Cartonnier pants are as comfortable as sweatpants — lightweight, silky sweatpants. I call them my Francesca pants, because they are vaguely similar to a pair of mauve pants that my favourite Master of None character wore in Season 2 of the show. I am hoping to track down the *exact* pair on eBay or locally (secondhand, of course), but I am enjoying this slightly less polished version in the meantime.

The other pieces, save for the necklace, are not exactly new but definitely well-loved. The necklace was a consignment store impulse buy, which I’m counting as a success. Its proportions juuuust narrowly avoid being cartoonish (or, as my husband is wont to say about my other favourite statement necklace, looking like a failed third grader’s art project) but I kinda dig that whole vibe. This whole outfit somehow straddles the line of being the sartorial equivalent of jolie laide and … is that a thing? I think I am tempted to make it a thing.

What I Wore: May 2017

Summer finally arrived in Edmonton last month, always an exciting time around these northern parts. Every year, I promise myself I will savour the warm weather to the fullest, and every year life proves a great distraction. I did my best to stop and smell the (mostly metaphorical) roses on weekends, but I`m still struggling to process that it`s already June. Mid-June, no less. Although sad to see the summer disappear so quickly, I am glad to get June over with; there is a lot going on, and if I can get through it all, there will be a nice reward at the end: a long weekend getaway to Palm Springs. Oh yeah!

There were some real winners in the mix last month, including my absolute fave No. 16. I also really liked Nos. 11 and 21, and … actually a few others as well. May was a good month, sartorially speaking. There was also some wardrobe curating going on, with a few pieces leaving my closet and a few more coming in. All of them thrifted, because you know that`s how I roll. Just wait till you see the next chapter of Tales From the Thrift. It`s gonna be epic.

Here is what I wore in May 2015 and May 2016.
