Honestly, this is an outfit you have seen before — or, at least, 99% of one. I’m shamelessly posting it again because (a) everyone seems to love it; and (b) I think it’s an example of a Peak Outfit. Allow me to explain.

Years and years ago, I started doing a thing where I constantly remixed my outfits. I never wore the same thing twice … for weeks and weeks on end. And years. I could do that because (a) I own a lot of clothes; (b) buy new things all the time; and (c) I enjoy doing it. It’s like painting — why do the same one over and over when there are so many pretty things out there to paint?

Anyway, I did this for a long time, and I had a lot of fun with it, but lately I’ve been finding my enthusiasm flagging a bit. I still like “playing” with my clothes — and I love how easy the Stylebook app makes that — but sometimes I just want to re-wear outfits that I’ve tried before and enjoyed. Sometimes the tried and true beats the excitement of the new. And there are a few outfits in particular that come to mind. And, again, Stylebook makes it easy for me to keep track of my most successful combinations; I have a specific folder dedicated to Favourite outfits and whenever I feel stuck for inspiration (or need an extra boost of confidence on a given day), I just dip into it for my OOTD.

Long story short, this is one of those outfit that just works. It’s the best combination I’ve hit upon for both the skirt and the blazer. Let’s start with the skirt. Here are all the ways I’ve worn this to work in the last year:

one, two, three
one, two, three
four, five six
four, five six

As you can see, 5 and 6 are almost identical except for the blouse. I think the latest version has a slight edge. It’s Peak Outfit.

Same thing when you consider the outfit trajectory of the blazer:

one, two, three, four
one, two, three, four

All this is not to say that I will never again wear these pieces separately, because I will — and I may even hit upon another Peak Outfit while I’m at it — but this is a combination I am sure you will see again (and again) on my IG, if perhaps not on the blog. Again.

  1. Love it!! You can really see the evolution from the series of outfit photos. 100% Peak Outfit, couldn’t improve it even if I wanted to.

  2. Totally peak. I love the evolution pictures. It’s kind of awesome to see it go from “maybe” to “yes!”

  3. Wow I can’t believe you didn’t wear the same outfit for years! That is impressive. I feel like I have a lot of clothes as well, but I definitely wear my fave outfits as often as I feel I can get away with. And sadly I don’t have many outfits I absolutely love, I should, considering how many clothes I have. I guess I’m probably not as creative a planner as you.

    • Constantly remixing pieces (to greater or lesser extent) was a lot of fun, but kinda over it at the moment. I’m sure the mood will strike again at some point. I think I’m just too busy right and, as with every hobby, this is taking a backseat.

  4. I love this post, and outfit! I also would have started with dark top pairings, for that skirt, but once you switched to lighter colors, with that top and blazer, it elevated the outfit in a new way. Even the small edit between the last two tops – it is so subtle, but totally great.

  5. I disagree with the favorite among the choices, but it raises an interesting (to me, at least) thought.

I prefer the first one. In part because I like strong colors like the purple and prefer that neckline (I like the first of the two pink tops better as well). But I think it mostly has to do with contrast and balance. Your choice seems more bottom heavy to me: it draws your eyes down, but not all the way down: the shoes don’t offer pop to grab me. And the contrast between the top and blazer only emphasizes the strong color of the skirt even more, making that my focal point.

I realize this top/bottom doesn’t work for all color combinations (black and white, for instance), but it definitely seems at play here.

Do you (maybe I’ve missed it) think about balance in this way? Or how/where the eye is drawn?

Maybe a bit more of a response that the outfit warranted, but i thought it was an interesting point.

    • To be honest, I’m not super analytical when it comes to outfits these days. I’m more of an “eyeball it and go” gal. The outfit I picked as my favourite looks the most harmonious to me, but that’s obviously subjective.
