For the last 3-4 years, I have been very particular about only posting outfits I have actually worn, photographed on the day that I wore them. (Hence the iPhone photos, I might add.) It is too tempting, otherwise, to choose outfits solely “for the blog” and, in my experience, those don’t necessarily reflect my authentic aesthetic; once you remove the requirement of “suitable for my actual day-to-day lifestyle”, I tend to veer off into questionable stylistic directions. Ahem.

I broke my rule in this case by necessity, because this is an outfit I wore while at a conference out of town. I took the photo before leaving for the conference because (a) I wanted to make sure the outfit looked good (I wore it while presenting and, hello, I’m vain); and (b) I wanted to have a decent photo of it in case it did turn out nicely. Well … there are iPhone photos, and then there are crappy shot-in-the-blinding-sunlight iPhone photos. Sorry, peeps. Still better than mirror selfies in a dark hotel room, I say. And this outfit definitely deserved a post because it turned out quite nicely. It’s very much Peak Adina, 2017 Edition.

Now, you might be thinking: this doesn’t look very similar to stuff Adina usually wears. That’s true. I don’t always nail this vibe, and I was thinking about why that is recently. I think it comes down to the fact that I rarely repeat an outfit 100%. I know I buy a lot of clothes, but I still don’t buy enough to come up with 5 brand new outfits a week, every week, so there is a lot of mixing and matching going on. Sometimes, the mix hits just the right style note; sometimes, it’s close, sometimes, it’s not so close. I mean, the swings in style aren’t violent, but they’re definitely noticeable some days — and they become more apparent in my monthly recaps where all the outfits stand side by side. Consistency is something that’s becoming more and more important to me … slowly overtaking my love of variety and experimentation. Say, whaaa?

As much as I love playing with clothes, there is no denying that, at the end of the day, there are things I like wearing more than others, and outfits I like more than others. So I am thinking about spending less time re-mixing, and more time refining and re-wearing favourite outfits. Will that make for more boring/repetitive blog posts? I hope not. Some of my fave style Instagrammers have a very specific aesthetic that doesn’t vary much from day to day; maybe if you put all of their outfits next to each other, they might seem repetitive, but individually? On any given day, they look fantastic. In the past, I haven’t been particularly drawn to the idea of a signature look, preferring variety and the fun of trying new style personas, but I think it’s time for a new outlook.

Slouchy Chic

I mean, this is probably more “shapeless” than “slouchy” but the latter sounds better somehow, so let’s go with it. Because, boy, I love this outfit a lot. Is it gauche of me to say that, as the person responsible for said outfit? I don’t know, but I stand by my pronouncement: this outfit is awesome.

Awesome to wear, at any rate.

Which raises the question: is the awesomeness of an outfit measured by how it feels to wear it, or by how it looks? Since I wasn’t wearing this particular outfit at the office, I’m going to vote for #1 … even if, as a blogger, I probably should pay more attention to #2.

Weird tangent aside, how about that outfit? The dress is by Rick Owens, which makes me feel extra cool even while looking like a garbage sack-wearing person because we all know that RO is impossibly cool, and some of that coolness is surely transferrable. The sweater is Elsamanda, which is a brand that sounds vaguely familiar to me though I can’t put my finger on why. Previously spotted at Winners, perhaps? Google suggests that there is some connection with Anthro, but I am skeptical. The tag says “made in Italy” which is also a nice bonus. Also nice? The colour. I love it. I love me a chunky knit too; it’s one of the few things I miss when the summer comes. Luckily, in Edmonton, I can count on chunky-knit-appropriate weather for a little while longer. Hashtag: always looking for that silver lining.

Fancy Pansy

It is surely no secret that I love florals, but not all are created equal. In my hierarchy of favourite flowers in print form, pansies are pretty high on the list. They’re so lively and colourful. Needless to say, I was immediately drawn to this Paul Smith dress; there is no mistaking the flowers on it, although the print itself is somewhat abstract. As much as I love pansies, that is a good thing; it takes the dress away from whimsical territory.

Here’s a better look at it:

The dress is made from that uber-soft jersey that drapes nicely without clinging to jiggly bits. It feels like pyjamas, which is always a nice feature in a work dress. I am crazy about midi dresses at the moment (in case you couldn’t tell from my recent posts), and I like that this one has a slim silhouette on the bottom half to keep things from getting too dowdy. The sleeves are also a nice touch, since it means that (a) I can wear a topper without getting all bunched up in the arms; and (b) I can take off my topper in my office without worries.

For work purposes, I typically need to add a blazer to my dresses and I picked this Zara one to accentuate my waist. The slightly flared peplum is lovely, and the waist sits just right for a dress pairing like this. As I had to attend a client event in this outfit, I kept the accessories very understated, but I am looking forward to exploring the colour mixing possibilities of this dress.
