Formal Shorts (With a Side of Florals)

With my return-to-work date looming, I’ve been itching to do the big closet switcheroo: putting all 80% of my casual clothes in the basement closet, and bringing up all my work (and fall, sigh) clothes upstairs. But I’ve been forcing myself to wait, the better to enjoy my last remaining weeks days of freedom maternity leave. Still, I couldn’t entirely resist the urge to start dressing up a little. Shorts and cardigan it is, then.

One thing I am definitely not excited to dig out again is the pantyhose. Ugh, that word. When I think about having to double down on the control top business, I get even more depressed. And do you know how hard it is to find “nude for me” pantyhose? I’ll have you note that I am just as pasty today, 10+ weeks into the summer, as I was back in June. Whomp, whomp, sad trombone.

the half tuck reveals itself …

On a slightly more positive note … I think my hair is starting to calm down a bit. It’s still not 100% back to the mermaid hair of my dreams, but it’s getting there. Slowly. (Side note: I did finally figure out the whole where-did-this-ombré-come-from situation. Perms can change the texture of hair and, apparently, one of the changes can be a lightening of the natural colour; this, combined with extra time spent outdoors this summer, likely accounts for my lighter ends. The darker roots were my re-growth since my December perm, showing my true colour. Of course, ombré hair is now totally passé. Where’s that damn sad trombone again?)

Chasing The Unicorn: A Quest for Yellow Sandals

Rachel Roy floral chambray dress; old navy yellow wedge sandals
Dress, Rachel Roy (via consignment); shoes, Old Navy; bag, MbMJ (via eBay)

You’ve seen this dress before (here and here), but it’s cute so I hope y’all can handle seeing it again in all of its wrinkled glory. I know. I know. I swear it doesn’t look like that when I put it on; some black magic happens in the thirty minutes it takes me to get all my ish together and out of the door, and bam. Wrinkles. I am appropriately ashamed.

sowwy, guys

But, really, I want to talk about the sandals.

o hai, shoes!

I have been looking for mustard yellow sandals all summer, and I am drawn to the inexorable conclusion that no such things exist in the wild. Good luck if you’re also looking for a pair. You might as well take up unicorn spotting – you’ll have more success doing that, I’m sure.

So, I grudgingly settled for this neon-y, citron yellow pair from Old Navy. They look really cute, and they’re not too uncomfortable. Citron yellow is … ok, fine, a lovely colour. (But it’s no mustard yellow, humph.) But, holy Flying Spaghetti Monster, are these shoes ever prone to getting dirty! I wear them for a couple of hours, and I look like I’ve been tilling muddy fields with my feet. Which, as we all know, is so not my scene. On the bright side, the faux suede seems responsive to a bit of soap and a wet cloth. On the not-so-bright side, I ain’t really got time for that, so these shoes are now officially in PITA territory. Pity, because they are cute.

Sigh.

How about we look at my necklace? And my really, really awkward smile?

I think I better stick with my usual derp face in the future.

My Favourite Skirt

I love this skirt. I really do. I could wear it pretty much every day for, like, a week without getting bored – and in Adinaland, that’s basically an eternity. Not bad for $8. Pairing with a chambray shirt is the height of unimaginativeness, but meh. I went there. No shame.

On the other hand … the hair. Ok, here’s the deal, you guys. I had my perm re-done the day before, and … and … it came out a little bit tight.

My hair tends to need a few days to settle into any new ‘do, and more so this time than usual. I won’t lie; I panicked at first. But things are getting better now. I think. Fingers crossed.
