Sporty Spice

What I Wore: Nature Walk

Hunter boots
Jeans, RACHEL Rachel Roy; top, Target; jacket, LOFT (via consignment); boots, Hunter

Admit it. You chuckled when you read that title because, let’s face it, “sporty” is not an adjective that you’d normally associate with me. But, I do like walking … and not just at the mall, smarty-pants. That counts as somewhat sporty, yes? A few weeks back, we took the kids for our first outdoor adventure of the season. One of our favourite spots is the Whitemud Crossing ravine; it’s a short drive from our house, and once you get going, it feels like you’re miles away from the city.

edmonton Whitemud Crossing ravineLuka said hello to the squirrels, and counted all the lakes. (Every body of water bigger than a puddle is a “lake” to him. That includes this creek, and the Pacific Ocean.) Teodora munched on her jacket, and then her daddy’s jacket, and then her fingers, which passes for high entertainment when you are 7 months old. That, and watching her big brother like a hawk, the better to imitate him later. Oh brother! Fun times for everyone.

Taking photos of my outfit earned me an eye roll or three, but these are the things I endure for you guys. I started off fairly composed (see above), but things went off the rails quickly (see below). To a chorus of hecklers telling me to cut it short, the squirrels are getting away … I did. I’ll have to tell you all about my outfit another time.

Return of the Birds

What I Wore: One Day in the Not-Too-Distant Past

bird print blouse
Skirt and cardigan, J. Crew Factory; blouse, eBay; bag, MbMJ (via consignment)

Technically, this is a rerun outfit, or at least 75% of one. But since I never posted the original*, voila!

The more I wear this blouse, the more it gets on my nerves. It’s nothing but static and slippery polyester. Wearing for a couple of hours here and there is all fine and good, but I don’t think it’s something I can handle for 10+ hours at work. It’s my fault for buying damn polyester in the first place (and $5 polyester at that), but it’s also that stupid pattern’s fault for making me even consider it in the first place. The birds are to blame, I tell you!

Anyway, I think I’m going to ditch the blouse come fall. Getting my money’s worth in the meantime shouldn’t be too difficult. And then – yay! – I can justify buying a new top. I, ahem, have some ideas already … and you are surprised not at all.

Bonus pic because I want to show off my bag:

* Okay, fine, here’s the other outfit. Technically it’s only 50% similar, because that’s a totally different skirt, I swear.

Paisley + Tortoiseshell

What I Wore: Bank Business

J. Crew paisley shirt
Jeans, Cleo (via consignment); sweater + shirt, J. Crew Factory; shoes, Stuart Weitzman

I wore this on a Monday, which means I was definitely overdressed; my business at the bank took all of three minutes, so technically it was a poor no excuse for getting all fancied up … but I’ll take any excuse, real or not, I can. You guys, I miss dressing up. Like, a lot. Casual style never used to be my forte (probably still isn’t, despite a lot of wishful thinking on my part), and I always felt more “me” in a dress and high heels. That would be entirely impractical right now, but a sparkly and totally unnecessary (and kid-unfriendly) necklace feels like less of a reach.

Every time I wear camel (which, total aside, is a stupid name for a colour, no?), I remember how much I like it as a neutral. And then I promptly forget again. But! It’s a very nice colour, even if it kind of blends in with my skin tone and hair, and makes me look like a big blob of dulce de leche ice cream. Mmmm, ice cream!

Where was I? Here’s a close-up of the necklace. I totally overpaid for it, but I bought it when I was in Vancouver and we all know that holiday shopping is often regret-inducing. Just me? (But not this. This is awesome.)
