I haven’t done a casual post in a while, so: ta-da! This is an update on one of my fave casual outfits from last year. I love grey, black and khaki with a pop of blue; it’s a nice, neutral, hard-to-screw-up palette. There are lots of (light) layers happening here which make this a great — wait for it — transitional outfit. If you read more than a few fashion blogs, you’re probably starting to get really tired of that word. Transitional. Honestly, at the risk of sounding cranky pants, I’m getting tired of hearing fashion bloggers enthuse about fall when it’s nothing more than a purely theoretical concept. Many bloggers’ “fall” is basically my summer. There is nothing inherently difficult about dressing for, say, 70 degree weather. Here, fall means that it’s low 40s in the morning and maybe mid 60s by the late afternoon. And that’s the best case scenario; in a few weeks, it will probably snow – bye, bye fall.

Ahem.

Where was I? Ah yes, transitional. Lots of light layers are a good solution to 20-degree-swing days. Which brings us back to this outfit. It’s one of my weekend stand-bys. It’s comfortable but a small step up from athleisure, which is always a bonus. All the pieces are older and well-loved, and they provide great mom-on-duty service. There really is no reason for me to be cranky about any of it, except that I hate fall on principle. It’s a trying time.

Is it spring yet?

And Now For Something a Little Different

True story: I hunted this skirt on eBay for MONTHS, never finding it in my size at a price I could live with. More than a year after I gave up on it, I found it — in my size, for $18 — at my local consignment store. It’s a (secondhand) shopping fairy tale! The label had been cut out, but I knew this was THE skirt; it’s a pretty distinctive design, after all. And even though it skews more quirky than my current aesthetic, I had to get it. No regrets, by the way. It’s an awesome skirt, and I love it. Especially those big a** pockets.

The blazer is also new (to me) from the same consignment store. It’s another Anthro brand, naturally. I can’t get enough ruffled blazers apparently. Now, on the surface, they might seem too whimsical for New Adina, but the truth is that they look quite sharp paired with a really minimalist outfit. Not THIS outfit, of course; there’s nothing minimalist going on here. But imagine this with a “column of black” outfit? Hella sharp.

Let’s also pause here and pat me on the back for avoiding black altogether on this occasion. Black is my safety crutch, so it’s always Kind Of A Big Deal when I don’t wear a stitch of it. I managed to pull off a perfectly respectable outfit without it, this time at least, which is encouraging. I’m going to try going 2-for-2 next time I wear this skirt. Wish me luck!

Think Pink

I loved this blazer+blouse combo last time I wore it — with a psychedelic print pencil skirt — so I decided to try with a more demure outfit. Well, as demure as things get when leopard print is involved. I feel like that was a necessary touch of “extra”, otherwise the outfit might have come a little too close to “staid” for comfort. We can’t have that. Minimalism is all fine and good, but we have to have a little fun, no?

I suppose pink might be considered “fun” as well, especially in a business environment. I always think twice before wearing a lot of pink to work, because it does tend to stand out and I’m wary of Legally Blonde associations. I’ve come to realize that I am going to stand out at my office no matter what — even my new neutral-loving, print-eschewing aesthetic is far brighter than most of my colleagues’ — so I might as well just embrace it. And hey, people won’t forget me in a hurry, which is a bonus when you’re the newbie at a large organization. Right? Right.
