Outfit Round-Up: January 2018

I’ve decided to switch things up a bit with my OOTDs; rather than individual posts, I am going to do regular round-ups of my favourite recent outfits. Almost all of my outfits end up on IG, so they don’t really need the double exposure, but this is supposed to be a style blog so sprinkling a few photos here and there is probably still a good idea. As much as possible, I will try to focus in on pieces I find most useful/versatile, as this is information that’s most likely to be of use to you guys.

My plan is to sprinkle a few of these posts throughout the month, but since January has come and gone, I figured I would do a larger recap to kick things off. So, in no particular order, here are my fave outfits from last month.

1) The Red Blazer-Coat Thingie

A741FCE8-1166-48A2-995E-3B2FD010A6D7

What do we call this? Is it a coat? Is it a blazer? I’m not sure, but I like how it switches up the traditional topper-trousers outfit formula. The “punched up” simplicity here – everything is plain and basic, but the silhouette is a bit unexpected and there’s that pop of coral – makes this a Peak Outfit. The blazer-coat is a Zara piece which … on one hand, yes, it’s fast fashion and not something I would normally thrift … but on the other hand, the clean aesthetic is very much my jam, and it is thrifted. The whole outfits is, in fact, thrifted/secondhand. Minus the bag, it cost something like $27. That might be a record.

2) The Rediscovered Dress

EBA232CD-CDAE-4B2A-A447-1D2E5274EF8D

I’ve had this Tracy Reese dress in my closet for more than 3 years. It was relegated to my swap/sell/donate pile ages ago, after I lost weight and went down a couple of sizes. For some reason or another, I’ve never been able to part with it. It has nice stretch, and it feels heavenly soft, without being unflatteringly clingy. I was going through the aforementioned pile during the holidays and decided it was just the thing to wear given that I have a few extra pounds of indulgences on board at the moment. Although it’s still on the looser side, it’s not noticeably “too big”, which is in many ways my “happy spot” with clothes. Anyway, nothing remarkable about this outfit except that every piece feels nice to wear, which makes me feel great, and that is all that one can ask for in the middle of the frigid wasteland that is early January.

3) All the Teal in the World

D7724226-BED2-43EE-AB03-24654FD07857

As soon as I thrifted this cashmere sweater, I knew I would try to work it into one of my monochrome outfits. Late last year, I rediscovered my old J. Crew wool pencil skirts, which are perfect for the same purpose. An outfit – not exactly matched, but close enough – was born. I threw in some teal shoes because why not. The sweater-skirt combo is a little more “ladylike” than my current aesthetic, but it’s also a classic silhouette that’s hard to fault.

4) Casual Friday

8C702F60-130B-44BF-8004-E5E9A1763F88

Another all-thrifted/secondhand outfit. Minus the bag, total cost would be something like $30 and change. Ah, but the bag! It’s a good one. I found it on eBay while browsing the “Anthropologie bag” listings. Who knew Moulinette Soeurs made bags? The details are very Peak Anthropologie – the travel-inspired design (which carries over to the inside pocket as well – very cute), the inner striped lining, the contrast handles. Mine was in mint condition, which is miraculous given the cream canvas involved, but I think it’s the kind of bag that will look no less charming for a bit of wear and tear. We shall see. In the meantime, it’s the perfect size for work. As for the rest of the outfit, I love the playfulness of this Elizabeth & James linen top, especially paired with the leopard pumps. And the jeans are Adriano Goldschmied and they are typically soft and comfy; next to my similar Madewell pair, they are my new favourite denim.

5) Fancy Feet

C3F8B696-0250-4E66-9CD8-A6AB38C3658B

I am a late adopter of many trends, which is probably why I was never destined for fashion blogging greatness. Take OTK boots; it took me until the year 2018 AD to finally give them a try — and that is only because I lack the internal fortitude to say “no” to a like-new pair of real leather, made in Spain boots for $17. I mean, I’m only human after all. Trying these on at home was the first time in the last, oh, 15 years that I found myself uttering the phrase “I really need a mini skirt”. Well, I don’t have a mini skirt, but this Antistar dress is one of the shortest I have, so it served for my plan. Specifically, my outfit. I like it. My husband hummed “Pretty Woman” the entire drive to our friends’ party. I didn’t even care because, yeah – I felt pretty damn good.

Tales From The Thrift: Summer Edition

Thrifting has definitely picked back up after a slow start earlier this year. Funnily enough, my shopping has slowed down quite a bit around the same time; I am (finally!) getting better pickier in my thrift choices which is good news for my on-going wardrobe curation efforts. But the hunt is always fun, as is writing these recap posts. So let`s get to it!

Here`s a quick round-up of brands I spotted in the past month …

… and a few more. I was trying to explain this to a (skeptical) friend from Vancouver, and this is proof: Edmonton is a designer-savvy town. Our thrift stores see all the fancy brands on the regular.

Talula blazer
Talula blazer

I used to be quite the blazer collector but my current work wardrobe can`t justify an extensive collection, so I talked myself into passing up on this Talula number. The tailoring was great, but the wool felt heavy and constrictive, which are two adjectives I don`t particularly like when it comes to blazers.

J. Crew top
J. Crew top

I used to be mad about J. Crew, but I haven`t been wowed by their pieces in a long time, either at retail or secondhand. This top is way too bright for me, though I could see it working for someone with a funkier style.

Halston Heritage dress
Halston Heritage dress

This was such a terrible dress on me. Like, comically bad. Separate from that, I was not impressed with the quality at all; it felt very Zara-esque, which is disappointing given the retail price point for Halston Heritage.

no name tunic
no name tunic

I was really tempted by this odd-duck, embroidered mesh tunic; I thought it had the potential to look quirky chic paired with something like my Rick Owens turtleneck maxi dress. I ended up passing on it in the end because I saw that the appliques were glued on to the netting, rather than sewn on, which seemed like a sure sign of fast fashion quality.

Free People top

Such a cute top … from the front. From the side — yikes. Way outside my comfort zone.

Left to right: Isaac Mizrahi; Tabitha; Club Monaco
Left to right: Isaac Mizrahi; Tabitha; Club Monaco

Here is a bunch of “almost but not quite” dresses. I used to own the Isaac Mizrahi for Target dress (left) in a different colour, and was impressed by the cut and quality. Sadly, like my old dress (since donated), this one was too big for me. It would make a great LBD. The Tabitha dress (middle) is something I would have loved a year ago. The Club Monaco dress was made of silk with a wonderful hand-feel (soooo soft), but the bright pink colour is definitely not in my palette.

Left: Judith & Charles; right: Club Monaco
Left: Judith & Charles; right: Club Monaco

More misses. I call these the “damn those hips” edition. I was intrigued by the Judith & Charles dress (left) with its mod-like patches, but it was cut for an inverted triangle (broad on top, tapered on the bottom) not a pear shape. Meanwhile, the Club Monaco shirt-dress (right) took my hips and magnified them like whoa.

Yoana Baraschi
Yoana Baraschi

I thrifted this exact same skirt for my mom earlier this year. If this skirt had been my size, we could have twinned, but the mix of florals and polka dots is a bit too “sweet” for my whole jolie laide style thing anyway so … no loss.

Maeve dress
Maeve dress

Too sweet, too small.

Hale Bop dress
Hale Bop dress

Also too small. And the pattern was a bit too much for me. True story.

Anthro dress
Anthro dress

I was initially drawn to this dress, but quickly realized that it fit really small and the fabric had seen better days.

Hermes (!!) pumps
Hermes (!!) pumps

Yup, that`s Hermes. My first time spotting it “in the wild”, and it certainly required a close look to do it. The shoes would have fit me, but they were in poor-ish condition, so I passed. In the past, I would probably have bought them for the thrift bragging rights alone, so this is progress.

French Connection oxfords
French Connection oxfords

I was really tempted to buy these for my BFF; I think she would have loved the style, but I wasn`t sure that they would fit her and I didn`t want to risk it.

Left: Maggy London: right: Lida Baday
Left: Maggy London: right: Lida Baday

Hey, look: more dresses that didn`t work out. The Maggy London maxi dress (left) was quite fabulous, but the fit was a bit off on me. I also have quite enough cocktail dresses, and not nearly enough cocktail parties to attend, so this dress would have been wasted in my closet in any event. I like a lot of Lida Baday pieces, but this dress (right) was the epitome of boring beige blah against my skin tone.

Clockwise from top left: One September; Maeve; Johnny Was; Odille
Clockwise from top left: One September; Maeve; Johnny Was; Odille

These are 4 tops I spotted while thrifting in Calgary last month. I bought 2 of them — can you guess which ones?

If you guessed the top right and bottom right, ding ding ding: you`re a winner. I got the Maeve floral number for myself (natch), and the Johnny Was embroidered blouse for my mom. The latter is a brand I recognized mainly from other thrifters` IGs; considering that it probably retailed for something like $200US, it perfectly illustrates one of my thrifting tips: do your research. Or, as in this case, let others do it for you and learn from them.

Cartonnier blazer
Cartonnier blazer

I hemmed and hawed over this blazer for a bit before biting the bullet. On one hand, I don`t NEED it (see above) and there is nothing truly extraordinary about it. On the other hand, it`s Cartonnier and I rarely walk away from Cartonnier, especially for $5. Sold.

Bailey 44 top
Bailey 44 top

This was one of my fave recent thrift finds. You`ve already seen this top in action, and it`s pretty awesome.

Etro tunic
Etro tunic

Ditto for this Etro top. I was originally on the fence about the print, but it`s really growing on me. It`s a beautifully made piece, which makes it hard to resist, print or no print.

Parker jacket
Parker jacket

A sequin jacket is a lot of “look”, but I`ve seen a friend of mine rock a similar one in a totally minimalist-slash-understated-elegant way so I decided to pick this up as an experiment. It was only something like $13, and in shockingly amazing condition considering how fragile sequin embroidery usually is. I`ve already worn it once and I liked it a lot, so no regrets here.

Dries Van Noten top (not dress)
Dries Van Noten top (not dress)

Another thrifting first: Dries Van Noten. It`s always such a pleasant surprise to see something like this hiding in a rack of stuff from Rickies, George, and the like. That`s the thrill of the hunt, you guys. Also, this prompted me to look up Dries stuff on eBay and I think I`m in love. This could be the start of a dangerous (to my wallet) love affair.

Your turn now: I want to hear all about your recent thrifting adventures. And if you have thrifting-related questions, hit me up in the comments.

Family Summer Vacation 2017: What I Wore in Vancouver

Packing for a family vacation is not all that exciting. Practical considerations win out over fashion, every time. Since I wanted to minimize the number of bags we had to check, and considering how much kids gear we had to haul with us, I had to make all my stuff (minus toiletries) fit into a carry-on. To some of you, that might seem like a total “duh” moment — after all, we were only traveling for a week — but I am a (largely reformed) over-packer so success was not a foregone conclusion. I did manage, even with a few errors in the mix.

My main mistake was not trusting the weather forecast. It showed the weather as being sunny, hot and dry during our stay … which is not my experience with Vancouver weather. I figured there would be at least one or two rainstorms and some cooler days, and packed accordingly. I was wrong. All the bulky, warm clothes I brought (two jackets, three sweaters, one pair of loafers)? Not necessary. I should have packed more summery pieces instead. As it was, I wore the same stuff more than once, which was fine. Like I said, style was not high on the agenda. Luckily, Vancouver is a very casual city for the most part, so I didn`t look like the total tourist I was.

Anthro dress
Anthro dress

I got a bunch of compliments from various strangers on this dress; I guess it was as much of a hit on the West Coast as at home. I tend to feel a bit self-conscious wearing it here, as it is on the short side; not so in Vancouver. Thigh-grazing hemlines are everywhere there, so I totally blended in.

This was another perfect dress to pack. It`s lightweight but offers some sun protection, and it`s wonderfully accommodating of all my gastronomic pursuits.

jeans & top
jeans & top

I ended up wearing this top twice, with different pants. I probably should have packed more dresses instead of two pairs of pants, but I made do. This top is also nice and roomy, so that was a bonus.

fancy outfit
fancy outfit

This counted as my most “fancy” outfit and I wore it (for dinner with friends in Yaletown which was as fancy as our vacation got) mostly because I wanted to get some use out of this blazer; I love it, but it was completely unnecessary on this trip. Oh well. Aritzia is super popular in Vancouver, so this Talula blazer was at least on trend.

I didn`t do much shopping on this trip, though not for lack of trying. I did check out the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (mostly so I would not lose ALL blogger cred) and bought a Natori Feathers bra to try out; everyone and their mom seems to love this bra, so I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. So far, I`m liking it but bras are a long-term game; I won`t make any snap judgments. While at Nordstrom, I did take a shine to a couple of bags:

In the end, I didn`t love them enough to justify even the sale price, so I passed. I haven`t been truly wowed by a bag in a long time, and I`m starting to wonder if my days as a “bag lady” are coming to an end. Say it ain`t so!

I also did a bit of thrifting at the Salvation Army on West 4th, without any success. Prices were on the high end, similar to Value Village back home. I did spot a few good brands, though.

spotted not thrifted highlights
spotted not thrifted highlights

Being short on time and means of rapid transportation meant that I did not get to explore the Van thrift scene more extensively; many of its highlights are located outside the downtown core where we spent 99% of our time. I`ve made peace with the fact that vacation thrifting is never going to be as satisfying as the homegrown kind, at least not until I travel alone and can devote myself to the task.

Lastly, I did pop in to a couple of stores on Robson Street to check out the retail scene. The Aritzia store was as overwhelming as always and I walked out almost immediately, needless to say empty-handed. You know how some people can`t handle places like Winners? I feel that way at Aritzia. All those rows of seemingly identical clothing that looks like nothing at all on a hanger. I can never find anything I like in that store, which is really weird because I`m loving the aesthetic of every piece I`ve thrifted recently. Also, the prices; I can`t with the prices.

The J. Crew store bored me as it has been doing for ages. What is happening there? One thing J. Crew used to do really well as recently as a couple of years ago was prints. I didn`t see a single interesting one this time. Similarly, Club Monaco was a disappointment. I went through a CM phase late last year, but I was not wowed by their current offerings. Nothing truly special that would justify the prices, as far as I`m concerned.

In contrast, Zara was full of alluring choices. I tried on an armful of clothes … and left empty-handed. Zara has a knack for making clothes that look “high fashion” from a distance, but they rarely seem to work on my body.

Zara stuff
Zara stuff

I`ve been looking for a knife-pleated skirt for a few months now, and loved the dark green shade of this ones, but the fabric was too stiff and the length did not flatter. At $70, it was nowhere close to being worthwhile. The shirt was intriguing but, on balance, too trendy for me.

Zara stuff, part 2
Zara stuff, part 2

I was excited to try this blouse after spotting it on the website earlier, but it was a disappointment. It simply didn`t look the same on me as in the stock photo, and I couldn`t figure out how to fix the problem. You can`t see them well in this photo, but I also tried on a pair of high waisted, dark green culottes which … no. Definitely, unquestionably, no.

So I came home from my trip (almost) empty-handed but feeling pretty Zen about it. Trying on clothes that didn`t work for me made me thankful for the clothes I already have … and excited to go back to my usual thrift haunts. I know. I`m incorrigible, always. See you on the thrift side!
