I know. Sponsored post, whaaaa? Ok, here’s the story.

I am super duper uncool, and the universe knows that. This, I imagine, explains why I never meet famous people. I’ve had two bona fide celebrity sightings in my whole life, 34 years and 2 continents. One time, I saw Elvis Costello and Diana Krall in a restaurant in Vancouver. And another time, I met this cool dude at a local watering hole:

Ah, mid-20s flashback

Working up the nerve to go over and talk to him was the scariest thing I’d done up to that point, because I’m pathologically shy around strangers, much less tall, handsome, famous ones. (He was a really nice guy.) But I digress.

My husband, on the other hand, is a magnet for famous people. One of the really cool people he knows is the dude behind thinkITEM. If you’re plugged into the Edmonton arts scene, or are a fan of mixed media and/or street art, then you’ve probably heard of thinkITEM. He does stuff like this:

(And one more Viper Sisters piece, because they’re my fave:)

And he makes stickers I collect like a 12-year old girl. Like so:

He also has a pretty sweet ride:

And he even let my kid “drive” it one day:

Last week, he mentioned on Facebook that he had some t-shirts kicking around, and asked for suggestions as to what to do with them. So, of course, I shamelessly asked for one. And I totally dropped the blog card, because LOL:

I am kind of a big deeeeeaa ... ahahahahah!
I am kind of a big deal … ahahahahah!

Because he’s a nice guy, Adriean didn’t LMAO all over my comment, and agreed to pity-gift me a t-shirt, and here we are. My first and last and only c/o item. I think Her Majesty looks pretty spiffy.

looking good

So, that’s the story of this (not really) sponsored* post. I really have nothing else to add, but you should follow thinkITEM on Insta if you want to be cool like me (hah!).

Wardrobe Workhorse

Gap striped peplum top; Marc Jacobs Mag bag
Jeans, Rachel Roy; top, Gap Factory; cardigan, J. Crew; shoes, Tory Burch (via consignment); necklace, J. Crew Factory; bag, MbMJ (via eBay)

So, this may be an embarrassing admission to make, but I’m still stumped when it comes to predicting what pieces will become my wardrobe workhorses. Things I think will be shoo-ins for the title end up being also-rans, often losing out to pieces I buy on impulse, with low non-existent expectations.

Take this Gap Factory striped top. It cost me a whopping $6, and I rarely over-think $6 purchases. (And by “rarely”, I mean never. Consider it my version of the stupid “latte factor”.) I have worn it … hang on, let me check* … 15 times this summer, and it shows no signs of being retirement-bound. It’s simple, hence versatile, but the ruffle/peplum thing adds a little bit of flair to otherwise uber basic-bitch outfits (my specialty). It doesn’t get more workhorsey than this.

Who woulda thunk it?

(Answer: not me.)

* Yes, I track my clothing use. I do it on my iPad, which makes it quick and easy, and I find it very useful for wardrobe-culling purposes. I also like that it gives me actual cost-per-wear numbers, as opposed to guesstimates, which can then help inform my buying choices. Nerd alert?

The Last Hurrah

Geometric print maxi dress; Marc Jacobs Mag bag; J. Crew hot pink Cece flats
Dress, thrifted; jacket, Tommy Hilfiger Factory; shoes, J. Crew (via consignment); bag, MbMJ (via eBay)

I’m not quite ready to call the summer over … except that maybe it is. My summer, at any rate, if not the season. Being back to work means saying sayonara to the majority of my casual wardrobe, particularly my dresses. I still get to wear jeans on Fridays, but psychedelic print maxi dresses … not so much.

A few months ago, a reader asked to see this dress on its own, and although that request is probably now moot and/or forgotten, here it is:

While lovely, I still think this dress is too body-conscious for my current stage in life, and I’m debating its future in my closet. To keep or to purge, that is the question. Let me know what you think.
