What I Wore: June 2017

June was a heck of a month. First of all, it felt like it was about three years long. I feel like I aged at least twice as much. I always know when I reach the limit of my stress tolerance because my body starts to mis-function; this time around, my IBS symptoms went into over-drive. Between dealing with a potentially life-threatening medical issue in my immediate family, juggling a number of hearings at work (including one out of town), and accepting a new position (!!!), this month was a doozy. I’ve never been more grateful for an opportunity to get the hell out of dodge for a few days as I was at the tail end of June, when my husband and I hopped on a plane to Palm Springs. Stay tuned for some recap posts.

On to clothes:

There were some real winners in the mix this month, #1, 3, 7, 10 and 13 in particular. A closet purge is probably in my future, though I am finding it hard to motivate myself to do it. Some of my less favourite outfits happen because I haven’t been able to let go of pieces that don’t suit my current aesthetic as well, but which I guilt myself into wearing because, well, they’re hanging there in my closet. I *know* I will be happier if I let go of some of the “dead weight” but the sentimental ties are strong. However, this summer is all about fresh starts for me, so I have a feeling there will be changes coming to my closet as well.

What I Wore: April 2017

I’m not typically a slacker (though that is certainly an aspiration) but April put the rest of the year (so far!) to shame. Work was much as usual, but my personal life — whoa. I started writing again, picking up the 30 page outline of Archer & Bell vol. 2 where I had left it off over a year ago. It was very exciting there for a few days … until I realized that the pace at which I’ve written in the past is probably not realistic at this time, with everything else that is going on in my life. I want (and need) writing to be fun, which means that I can’t (and won’t) hold myself to a rigid schedule. Hopefully, the book will see the light of day at some point. Speaking of other fun things, I also read a bunch of books and watched a ton of Netflix, and somehow still managed to keep up with life, which is some kind of miracle, and also the reason why I am constantly sleep deprived. No regrets; 10/10, would do it all again. And that is still not all. I also did some thrifting, got microblading (!!), and had my initial consultation for Lasik surgery, which is happening very very soon.

But let’s not forget why you’re here (I assume): the clothes.

I’ve been doing this blogging thing for a long time — my 7th blogging anniversary is just around the corner — so I can’t help but feel like I’m becoming more and more predictable, at least as far as my outfit formulas go. These are all combinations you’ve seen before, with a few new(ish) pieces mixed in. I think I ended up using more prints than in recent months; I’m not sure how I feel about that. On one hand, I tend to *feel* more comfortable in plainer outfits these days. On the other hand, I *like* looking at more colourful, print-heavy outfits. I’m still working on finding the right balance, one day at a time.

For fun, here’s a look at my April 2015 and April 2016 recaps.

What I Wore: March 2017

March was a long month, but seemed to fly by. It’s hard to believe that we are already in Q2 of 2017. On one hand, I am happy because it means that summer is almost here, and summer is my favourite time of year. Also, vacation time, baby! On the other hand, time needs to slow the heck down because at this rate my kids will be teenagers in the blink of an eye, and I AM NOT READY. I am still struggling to process the fact that we don’t have babies anymore. My daughter, the “baby” of the family, is very much her own person, with very definite Ideas about Things, which she is not afraid to share, invited or not. That includes clothes, by the way — her own and mine. I walked into her bedroom the other week to find a perfect flatlay of her choices for that day’s outfit. I haven’t actively encouraged her interest in clothing, so it’s amusing to me to see her develop it — presumably from observation. Well, not the flatlay part; that’s a skill she certainly didn’t learn from me, as my Instagram can attest.

Anyway, here’s some clothes I wore (and did not attempt to flatlay):

Although there are certainly some less successful outfits in the lot, I am quite happy with most of them. There was a lot of joy being sparked, KonMari style. Strangely (perhaps), I feel like some of my non-favourite outfits were the result of deliberate attempts to re-mix statement items a few times throughout the month. I think this might be a process issue; creating outfits based on “set” list of pieces is different than creating outfits purely based on what combination sparks joy at a given moment, and perhaps that affects the results. I’m tempted to abandon any and all attempts at a monthly capsule, and take a more free-form approach to outfit planning in the future — even if that means never re-wearing the same dress or skirt in a given month. After all, that should count as a perk of a large wardrobe, no?

For a fun comparison, here is what I wore in March 2015, and March 2016.
